JEE Main + JEE Advanced — Everything You Need to Know

Updated April 2026 | Exam Dates, Eligibility, Pattern, Syllabus, Cutoffs & Strategy

Every year, over 1.3 million students across India sit down for one of the world`s most competitive engineering entrance exams. Some dream of the IITs. Others target NITs, IIITs, and top government engineering colleges. All of them face the same two-stage challenge: JEE Main, and then JEE Advanced. Whether you are starting your preparation from Class 11, repeating after a gap year, or helping a student as a parent or educator, this guide gives you every verified fact about IIT-JEE 2026 — dates, eligibility, exam pattern, syllabus, cutoffs, and a strategy that actually works.
Whether you are starting your preparation from Class 11, repeating after a gap year, or helping a student as a parent or educator, this guide gives you every verified fact about IIT-JEE 2026 — dates, eligibility, exam pattern, syllabus, cutoffs, and a strategy that actually works.

Section 1: What Is IIT-JEE?

IIT-JEE is not a single exam. It is a two-stage selection process:

  • JEE Main — conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Serves as the qualifying exam for NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs, and is the gateway to JEE Advanced.
  • JEE Advanced — conducted by one of the seven zonal IITs on a rotating basis under the Joint Admission Board (JAB). Clearing this is the only route to the 23 IITs.

Think of JEE Main as the selection round and JEE Advanced as the final. You must clear the first to reach the second.

Quick Stat:As of 2026, approximately 1.3 million students appear in JEE Main annually. Only the top 2,50,000 qualify for JEE Advanced, and around 17,000-18,000 ultimately gain IIT admissions.

Section 2: JEE Main 2026 — Complete Guide

2.1 What Is JEE Main?

JEE Main is the national-level entrance examination conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission to:

  • B.E./B.Tech. programs at NITs, IIITs, and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs) — Paper 1
  • B.Arch. and B.Planning programs across India — Paper 2A and Paper 2B

JEE Main also acts as the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced. Without a top-2,50,000 rank in JEE Main, you cannot attempt JEE Advanced.

2.2 JEE Main 2026 Exam Dates

JEE Main is conducted twice a year. Both sessions are independent; a student can use the better of the two scores.

Session

Mechanics (Rotational dynamics, SHM, Fluid mechanics), Wave Optics, Electrodynamics (AC/DC circuits, EMI), Modern Physics (Photoelectric effect, Nuclear physics), Thermal Physics, Errors & Measurement
Chemistry
Physical: Chemical Equilibrium, Electrochemistry, Chemical Kinetics, Thermochemistry; Inorganic: Coordination compounds, Qualitative analysis, Periodic properties; Organic: Reaction mechanisms, Named reactions, Stereochemistry, Polymers, Biomolecules
Mathematics
Algebra (Complex numbers, Matrices), Calculus (Limits, Differentiation, Integration, Differential equations), Coordinate Geometry (Circles, Conics, 3D), Vectors, Probability, Trigonometry

Compared to JEE Main, JEE Advanced questions frequently involve multi-concept problems where a single question may span topics from different chapters or even different subjects.

3.6 JEE Advanced Cutoff 2025 & Expected 2026

The qualifying cutoff is the minimum score required for inclusion in the JEE Advanced rank list. Clearing this cutoff makes you eligible for IIT admissions via JoSAA — it does not guarantee a seat.

Category
JEE Advanced 2025 Qualifying %
JEE Advanced 2025 Qualifying %
Common Rank List (CRL / General)
20.56%
74 marks (out of 360)
GEN-EWS & OBC-NCL
18.50%
~67 marks
SC / ST / PwD
10.28%
~37 marks
Preparatory Course
5.14%
~19 marks

Context:The cutoff dropped across all categories in 2025 compared to 2024. In 2024, the CRL qualifying percentage was 30.34%. Cutoffs vary annually based on paper difficulty and candidate performance — always aim well above the minimum.

3.7 IIT Admission Cutoffs — Competitive Reality

Clearing the qualifying cutoff gets you on the rank list. Actual IIT admission depends on your rank and the closing ranks for your chosen branch and institute at JoSAA counselling. Here is a realistic picture for 2025:

Branch / Institute
JEE Adv. 2025 General Category Closing Rank (Approx.)
CS Engg. — IIT Bombay
~66
CS Engg. — IIT Delhi
~126
CS Engg. — IIT Madras

Section 5: Preparation Strategy That Works

5.1 For JEE Main

Master NCERT first. Both Physics and Chemistry questions are heavily grounded in NCERT concepts. Do not skip NCERT in favour of coaching material.

Prioritise high-weightage chapters.Chapters like Mechanics, Electrostatics, and Organic Chemistry appear every year with high question density.

Mock tests are non-negotiable.Take full-length CBT mock tests from official NTA portals and reputed platforms. Analyse every error — not just what went wrong, but why.

Attempt both sessions.Your best score across both sessions counts. Session 1 gives you a baseline and real-exam experience for Session 2.

Time management in Section B.Numerical questions carry no negative marking. Attempt them all. Even a calculated guess based on estimation can earn full marks.

5.2 For JEE Advanced

Shift from memorisation to understanding.JEE Advanced tests whether you understand a concept well enough to apply it in an unfamiliar context. Rote learning does not work here.

Solve previous year papers seriously.JEE Advanced PYQs (2010 onwards) are the single most effective preparation tool. The paper style, difficulty, and concept coverage are unmatched by any mock.

Target subject-wise minimum marks. You must clear the cutoff in each subject individually, not just in aggregate. Ignoring a weak subject is a common reason for failure.

Learn to handle variable patterns.Since the paper pattern changes every year, you must be comfortable with any question format — read the instruction booklet carefully before starting.

Physical and mental preparation.JEE Advanced is a 6-hour examination on a single day. Practicing full-length papers under timed conditions is essential conditioning.

Section 7: Frequently Asked Questions

Can I appear for JEE Advanced if I skipped JEE Main Session 1?

Yes. You can qualify for JEE Advanced from either Session 1 or Session 2. Only Session 2 scores are used to generate the JEE Advanced shortlist if you appear in both, but qualifying via Session 1 alone is equally valid.

How many times can I attempt JEE Advanced?

A maximum of two times in two consecutive years. The proposal to extend this to three attempts was reverted. The two-attempt policy is confirmed for 2026.

Does JEE Main score have any role in IIT admissions?

No. IIT admissions are based entirely on JEE Advanced rank. Your JEE Main percentile only determines whether you are shortlisted to appear for JEE Advanced.

Is there a separate cutoff for different IITs?

Yes. There is a single qualifying cutoff for the rank list, but admission cutoffs vary dramatically by institute and branch. These are set during JoSAA counselling based on the number of seats and applicant demand.

Can NRI or foreign nationals appear for JEE Advanced?

Foreign nationals and OCI/PIO cardholders are exempted from qualifying JEE Main and can directly register for JEE Advanced. Check the official jeeadv.ac.in brochure for the special category process.

What is the JoSAA counselling process?

Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) conducts centralized counselling for IITs (via JEE Advanced rank) and NITs/IIITs/CFTIs (via JEE Main rank). You register on josaa.nic.in, fill in college and branch preferences, and seats are allocated based on your rank, category, and seat availability across multiple rounds.

Is a drop year worth it for JEE?

A drop year can be highly productive if you have a clear gap in preparation and the discipline to follow a structured study plan. However, it is a significant personal, financial, and mental commitment. Discuss this with mentors and evaluate your realistic readiness before deciding.
