NEET UG 2026: The Complete Guide

Everything You Need to Know — Exam Date, Eligibility, Pattern, Syllabus, Cutoffs & Strategy

Updated April 2026 | Verified from NTA & NMC Official Sources

Every year, more than 22 lakh students across India sit for one exam that determines their entire medical career. No alternative routes, no back doors — NEET UG is the single gateway to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, veterinary, and several other healthcare courses in India.
Whether you are a Class 11 student just starting out, a Class 12 student preparing for your first attempt, or someone repeating after a previous try, this guide gives you every verified, up-to-date fact about NEET UG 2026 — from exam dates and eligibility to syllabus, exam pattern, cutoffs, seat availability, and a preparation strategy that is grounded in reality.

Section 1: What Is NEET UG

NEET UG stands for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate). It is the single, centralised medical entrance examination in India, conducted annually by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Since 2020, passing NEET UG is mandatory for admission to:
  • MBBS and BDS courses in all government and private medical and dental colleges in India
  • AYUSH courses — BAMS (Ayurveda), BHMS (Homeopathy), BUMS (Unani), BSMS (Siddha)
  • BVSc & AH (Veterinary Science) courses at recognised institutes
  • MBBS programs abroad — Indian students must qualify NEET UG before studying medicine overseas if they intend to practise in India
  • AIIMS and JIPMER institutes — previously independent, now part of NEET

Quick Stat:For NEET 2026, an estimated 25–26 lakh candidates registered — making it potentially the largest medical entrance exam in history. Approximately 1,28,976 MBBS seats are available across 818 medical colleges in India.

Section 5: NEET UG 2026 Syllabus

The NEET UG 2026 syllabus is prescribed by the National Medical Commission (NMC) / UGMEB and covers Class 11 and Class 12 topics across Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. The updated syllabus was released in December 2025 and follows the same structure as 2024–25 with minor refinements.NCERT textbooks remain the most authoritative source — a significant portion of NEET questions each year are directly drawn from NCERT, making them non-negotiable in preparation.

Section 6: Seats & Colleges — The Realistic Picture

6.1 Total Seats Available Through NEET UG 2026
Course
Approximate Seats (India, 2026)
MBBS (Total — Govt + Private)
~1,28,976 seats across 818 colleges
MBBS (Government colleges only)
~58,583 seats across 421 govt colleges
BDS (Dental)
~27,868 seats
AYUSH (BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, BSMS)
~52,720 seats
BVSc & AH (Veterinary)
~603 seats
AIIMS MBBS (15 institutes)
~1,205 seats
JIPMER MBBS (2 institutes)
~200 seats

Reality Check:Over 25 lakh students are competing for roughly 1.29 lakh MBBS seats. For government MBBS alone (~58,000 seats), fewer than 3 in 100 NEET aspirants succeed. Understanding this motivates preparation — not fear.

6.2 States with Most MBBS Seats
State
Approx. Total MBBS Seats (Govt + Private)
Karnataka
~14,095
Uttar Pradesh
~13,425
Tamil Nadu
~13,100
Maharashtra
~12,826
Telangana
~9,515
Andhra Pradesh)
~8,500+
Gujarat
~7,000+
6.3 Seat Quota System

Government MBBS seats are divided into two main quotas:

  • 15% All India Quota (AIQ): Open to candidates from any state. Counselling conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) at mcc.nic.in.
  • 85% State Quota: Reserved for domicile candidates of the respective state. Counselling conducted by each state`s own authority (e.g., DMER Maharashtra, KEA Karnataka, DGHS Delhi).
  • AIIMS and JIPMER seats fall entirely under AIQ and are filled through MCC counselling.

Tip:Register for BOTH AIQ counselling (MCC) and your state quota counselling simultaneously. Missing either registration can cost you a seat even if you have a qualifying rank.

Section 7: NEET UG Cutoffs — Qualifying vs Admission

7.1 Two Types of Cutoffs

Qualifying Cutoff: The minimum score/percentile set by NTA to be eligible for counselling. Crossing this does not guarantee a seat — it just makes you eligible to participate.Admission Cutoff: The actual score at which a seat closes in a specific college, quota, and category during JoSAA/MCC/State counselling. This is what truly determines admission.

7.2 NEET UG Qualifying Cutoff — Category-wise
Category
Qualifying Percentile
Expected Score Range (out of 720)
General / EWS
50th Percentile
~720 to 137 marks
OBC / SC / ST
40th Percentile
~136 to 107 marks
General-PwD
45th Percentile
~136 to 121 marks
OBC-PwD / SC-PwD / ST-PwD
40th Percentile
~120 to 107 marks

Important:Qualifying the NEET cutoff only makes you eligible for counselling. Securing a government MBBS seat requires a significantly higher score — typically 600+ for General category and 500+ for reserved categories.

7.3 Realistic Score Targets for Different Goals
Target
Expected Score Needed (General Category)
Just qualify NEET (eligible for counselling)
~137+ marks
Government MBBS seat (any state, state quota)
~550–620 marks
Government MBBS seat (AIQ — competitive states)
~620–650+ marks
Top government colleges (Maulana Azad, MAMC, etc.)
~665–680+ marks
AIIMS New Delhi
695–715+ marks
BDS Government seat (any college)
~500–550 marks
AYUSH (BAMS/BHMS) Government seat
~400–450 marks

Perspective:A 650+ score (out of 720) in NEET puts you comfortably in the running for a government MBBS seat in most states. Aim for 650+ as your floor, not your ceiling.

7.4 Previous Year Qualifying Cutoff History
Year
General Category Range
OBC/SC/ST Range
NEET 2025
720–137 (approx.)
136–107 (approx.)
NEET 2024
720–164
163–129
NEET 2023
720–137
136–107
NEET 2022
715–117
116-93
NEET 2021
720–138
137-108

The qualifying cutoff has remained broadly stable around 137–165 for the General category across years. Cutoff fluctuations are driven by the difficulty of the paper and the number of candidates — not arbitrary decisions.

Section 8: NEET UG 2026 Counselling Process

Once NEET UG results are declared (expected June 2026), qualified candidates participate in a centralised counselling process for seat allotment. There are two parallel tracks:

8.1 MCC Counselling — 15% All India Quota
  • Conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) at mcc.nic.in.
  • Covers: 15% AIQ seats in all government medical colleges, AIIMS (all 15 campuses), JIPMER (both campuses), ESI and central university medical colleges.
  • Open to candidates from any state across India.
  • Typically conducted in 3–4 rounds including a mop-up round.
8.2 State Quota Counselling — 85% State Quota
  • Conducted independently by each state`s counselling authority (e.g., DMER, DGHS, KEA, DME).
  • Covers: 85% seats in state government medical colleges + state-specific private college seats.
  • Generally restricted to candidates with domicile/residency in that state.
  • Each state has its own timeline and registration process — track these separately.
8.3 AYUSH Counselling
  • Conducted by AACCC (AYUSH Admissions Central Counselling Committee) for central and deemed institutes.
  • State-level AYUSH counselling is conducted by respective state AYUSH departments.
8.4 Counselling Process — Steps
Step
Action
1. Registration
Register on mcc.nic.in (AIQ) and your state counselling portal separately
2. Choice Filling
Fill and lock your preferred colleges and branches in priority order
3. Seat Allotment
Seats allotted based on NEET rank, category, and seat availability
4. Document Verification
Verify documents online or at the designated reporting centre
5. Fee Payment
Pay the requisite fees to secure your allotted seat
6. Reporting to College
Join the allotted college by the deadline with original documents

Pro Tip:Fill as many college preferences as possible during choice filling — including colleges you may not prefer. A seat allotted in round 1 can always be upgraded in later rounds if a better option opens up.

Section 9: Preparation Strategy for NEET UG 2026

9.1 Start With Biology, Always

Biology is 50% of your paper. With 360 marks on offer, your NEET rank is largely decided by how well you perform in Biology. NCERT Biology (Class 11 and 12) is your primary and often sufficient resource — read it thoroughly, not superficially.

9.2 NCERT Is Non-Negotiable

Most NEET questions are directly drawn from NCERT text, diagrams, and examples.Biology is 50% of your paper. With 360 marks on offer, your NEET rank is largely decided by how well you perform in Biology. NCERT Biology (Class 11 and 12) is your primary and often sufficient resource — read it thoroughly, not superficially.

9.3 Chapter-Wise Weightage — What to Prioritise
Subject
High-Weightage Topics (Historically Consistent)
Biology
Plant Kingdom, Human Physiology (Digestion, Respiration, Circulation), Genetics & Evolution, Reproduction, Ecology, Biotechnology, Cell Biology
Chemistry
Organic Chemistry (Reaction mechanisms, Named reactions), Coordination Compounds, Equilibrium, Electrochemistry, Biomolecules
Physics
Mechanics, Electrostatics & Current Electricity, Optics, Modern Physics, Thermodynamics
9.4 Mock Tests Are Your Best Friend

Practise is more important than studying more topics. Solve full-length mock tests weekly once your syllabus is covered. Analyse every wrong answer — understand why you went wrong, not just what the right answer is. This step is where most serious aspirants separate themselves.

9.5 Previous Year Papers — The Gold Standard

Solve NEET PYQs from the last 10 years (2016–2025). A significant portion of questions in any NEET paper are conceptually similar or directly repeated from previous years. Time your practice under real exam conditions — 3 hours, offline.

9.6 Revision Strategy

Revise every topic at least 3 times. First revision within 24 hours of studying. Second revision at the end of the week. Third revision during the final month. Use short notes or mind maps for Biology taxonomy, chemical reactions, and Physics formulae.

9.7 Recommended Books for NEET UG
Subject
Primary (Must)
Supplementary (Optional)
Biology
NCERT Class 11 & 12 (both volumes)
Trueman`s Biology, MTG Fingertips
Chemistry
NCERT Class 11 & 12 (Organic + Inorganic + Physical)
O.P. Tandon (Physical & Inorganic), MS Chauhan (Organic)
Physics
NCERT Class 11 & 12
H.C. Verma (Concepts of Physics), DC Pandey

Important:Do not use too many books. Depth over breadth — two books per subject, thoroughly done, outperforms ten books skimmed.

Section 10: What If You Don`t Get Your Target Score?

Not reaching your target NEET score does not close the door on a medical career. Here is a clear map of your options:

Score Range (Approx.)
Realistic Options
680–720
AIIMS (top campuses), top Govt. MBBS colleges in AIQ
620–679
Government MBBS seats in competitive states (AIQ & state quota)
550–619
Government MBBS in several states (state quota), private MBBS
450–549
Private MBBS, BDS government colleges, AYUSH government seats
300–449
BDS private, AYUSH (BAMS/BHMS), Nursing, Allied Health Sciences
137–299 (Qualifying)
Private AYUSH, Paramedical courses, or repeat NEET next year

Repeating NEET:Since there is no attempt cap, repeating NEET is a valid, common strategy. Thousands of students improve by 100–200 marks in a focused repeat year. Before deciding, evaluate your preparation gaps, access to mentorship, and emotional readiness.

Section 12: Frequently Asked Questions — NEET UG 2026

Is there a limit on how many times I can attempt NEET?

No. NTA has removed all attempt limits for NEET UG. You can appear as many times as you like, as long as you meet the age (minimum 17 years by December 31) and educational qualifications.

Can I appear in NEET 2026 while waiting for my Class 12 result?

Yes. Students appearing in Class 12 in 2026 are eligible to sit for NEET 2026 provisionally. You will need to fulfil the minimum marks criteria in your Class 12 to confirm admission — but you can take the exam before results are declared.

Are AIIMS seats available through NEET? Do I need a separate exam?

All 15 AIIMS institutes and both JIPMER campuses are now part of NEET. There is no separate AIIMS or JIPMER exam. Admission is entirely based on your NEET UG rank, processed through MCC AIQ counselling.

What is the difference between AIQ and State Quota counselling?

15% of government MBBS seats across India are open to all NEET qualifiers regardless of state — this is the All India Quota, managed by MCC. The remaining 85% are state quota seats, typically reserved for domicile candidates of that state and managed by state authorities. You must register for both separately to maximise your options.

Can I get a government MBBS seat if I score 550 in NEET?

It depends on the state and category. In some states, 550 is competitive enough for a government seat under reserved category quotas. For General category in highly competitive states (Maharashtra, Delhi, Karnataka), you typically need 600+. Refer to previous year state-wise cutoff data for a more accurate estimate.

Is NEET compulsory for studying medicine abroad?

Yes. As per NMC regulations, any Indian student wishing to study MBBS abroad and subsequently practise medicine in India must qualify NEET UG. This rule applies to all foreign medical institutions.

What happens if I qualify NEET but do not participate in counselling?

You lose that year`s admission opportunity. NEET scores are valid for one year only for admission purposes. If you qualify but miss counselling, you would need to appear in NEET again the following year to be considered for admission.

Can private school or open-school students appear for NEET?

Private candidates (open-school students) are eligible to appear for NEET UG 2026, subject to the outcome of pending court cases. Check the latest official notification at neet.nta.nic.in for the current status before applying.

Practising Under Real Conditions Is the Difference-Maker

NEET is a one-shot, pen-and-paper, 3-hour test. The students who perform on exam day are not always those who studied the most — they are those who practised under conditions closest to the actual exam. Timed full-length tests, OMR-based practice, and rigorous mock test analysis are what convert preparation into performance.
At Clasify, we build AI-powered assessment tools designed specifically for coaching institutes and schools preparing students for NEET, JEE, and board exams. Our platform offers computer-based test simulations, automated OMR evaluation, detailed performance analytics, personalised question banks, and white-label solutions — giving coaching centres everything they need to help students practise smarter and perform better.
